Performing Arts centre badly needed: Masidi

Kota Kinabalu: A Centre for Performing Arts should be built in Sabah to provide a conducive atmosphere for talented Sabahans to practise their crafts, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

He believes the centre would be the platform to further promote artistic initiatives within Sabah." There are so many talented people in Sabah but I believe we may not have provided them a conducive atmosphere to practise their craft," he said after viewing "Karaoke", a film by Sabahan Chris Chong, at GSC 1Borneo, Tuesday.

The 75-minute film did Malaysia proud when it was adjudged the winner of the Maverick Prize in the 2009 Calgary International Film Festival apart from being chosen as the official selection 2009 in the Toronto International Film Festival as well as becoming the first Malaysian film in 14 years to be presented at the Cannes 2009 Directors Fortnight.
